This has involved setting up four businesses with the help of the Young Enterprise business advisors who guided the students each week with their own ‘Board Meeting’ to discuss progress and set targets that needed to be achieved each week.

The four businesses of Hatch, Spark, Churcher’s Craft Company and Chirpy Chicks all focussed their attention on researching, making, marketing and finally selling their products at a stall they organised at The Square in Petersfield and at an end of term School Fayre.

They made an incredible £735.44 profit- with all proceeds going to the Gambian Schools Appeal- a new charitable link the school has recently made which sponsors individual children.

Senior Teacher Alex Greenaway described the energy and entrepreneurial skills of the 11 year old pupils as ” amazing , considering the children are only 11 years old- watch out Sir Alan Sugar”!

The masterplan for Whitehill & Bordon Eco-town will guide the regeneration of the town over the next 25 years.

The masterplan for Whitehill & Bordon Eco-town has been formally approved by East Hampshire District Council and will now guide the regeneration of the town over the next 25 years.

The masterplan, which sets out how the town will get the facilities and infrastructure that it so desperately needs while protecting and enhancing the environment, was highly praised and unanimously agreed at the full council meeting on Wednesday night.

This formal sign-off by the district council was the final stage in a rigorous approval process which included taking on board comments from: EHDC’s Development Policy Panel, Whitehill Town Council, specialist groups (which are groups of residents and other interested parties that want to help guide the regeneration of the town), the Standing Conference (which is a forum made up of local councillors and representatives from the community) and the Delivery Board.

This is in addition to all the community views given through the neighbourhood consultation last autumn.
The masterplan will now be taken into consideration when planning applications are decided – so it is a guide to development rather than stipulating exactly how it will take place. The masterplan safeguards the town from piecemeal development.

Cllr Glynis Watts, EHDC’s deputy leader and portfolio holder for regeneration, said: “The masterplan will ensure that future development in the town is in line with our Eco-town vision which puts the environment at the heart of everything we do.

“The Eco-town team has pulled out all the stops and produced the masterplan two months ahead of the original schedule.

“I think that this masterplan is a credit to Whitehill & Bordon councillors, the Eco-town team, the Council and all those involved.

“But most importantly it is something that the town can be really proud of.”

Cllr Adam Carew, Mayor of Whitehill, said: “The masterplan is a major milestone in the regeneration of our town and offers a robust blueprint for our next chapter, to transform Whitehill & Bordon into a green town fit for the 21st century. It puts the flesh on the bones of our green vision to provide us with the shops and facilities we so desperately need whilst protecting our green spaces for people and wildlife.

“Local councillors and residents have worked hard (with our partners) to secure major and lasting changes to the masterplan. These include a reduction from 5300 to 4000 houses, no housing on Viking Park, new sports and leisure facilities, a new education hub, enhanced public transport, protection of our green spaces and safeguarding of Army buildings including the much loved Phoenix Theatre, BOSC and the Garrison Church. We have ensured new homes will be built to the very highest eco standards, with larger family homes and a balanced split of social housing tenures to suit all sections of our community.

“It’s been hard work but the resulting changes have been worth it. It means that the town now has a robust guide for its future that will ensure it goes from strength to strength.”

Changes to the masterplan have been informed by 10 technical studies that have tested the proposals – as well as widespread consultation which ran from October to December last year and involved 10 workshops and numerous drop-in events.

The masterplan sets out where the town centre, facilities, homes and employment areas will go.

In addition it also shows a safeguarded location for a possible rail station on the edge of Hogmoor Inclosure and a public transport hub in the centre of the town.

It also proposes two locations where a new sports hub could go. This could be at either Budds Lane or Mill Chase Road.

The sports hub will include a new six lane swimming pool (with a learner pool as well), a sports hall, up to 100 gym stations (which may be split across a range of local sites), an outdoor synthetic turf pitch, four tennis courts, four squash courts, two outdoor bowls rinks and around seven hectares of sports pitches/outdoor courts.

Buffer zones have also been introduced to ensure that no development can take place within 400metres of European protected green spaces.

Changes to the revised version include:

A reduction from 5,300 to 4,000 homes (with homes being built to the highest environmental standards that are available at the time)

No housing on Viking Park

A site for a new learning campus (which could provide education for 11-19-year-olds and other learning facilities for wider groups)

Reduced housing density at Bordon and Oakhanger Sports Club (BOSC)

A new water feature (Oxney Stream integrated within the new residential areas as a natural landscape feature)

Additional protection for green spaces (this means including other parks and open spaces within the town in the potential Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace network offering a connected network of green spaces across the town. This would ensure their long term maintenance and management.)

A new public space opposite the High Street and Chalet Hill junction

A new town park within easy reach of the new town centre

Smaller energy centres rather than one energy centre to power the town

Traffic management along the A325

Two routes for the inner relief road have been proposed (these are through Viking Park and using the southern part of the disused rail corridor)

Allotments near to the area where new homes will be built – rather than on Hogmoor Inclosure

Because of the reduced housing numbers the education provision has been reassessed and now two new primary schools are proposed – rather than three

The masterplan will be available at the end of May.

Copies of it will be available to read in Whitehill Town Council offices at the Forest Community Centre during opening hours.

It will also be available in the following locations: Bordon Library, Liphook Library, Alton Library, Petersfield Library and Mill Chase Community Technology College.

Copies will be given to Kingsley Parish Council, Lindford Parish Council, Headley Parish Council, Bramshott and Liphook Parish Council, Greatham Parish Council and Selborne Parish Council.

There will also be copies of the executive summary which residents can keep.

It is also available to read online at www.whitehillbordon.com

The next major consultation will take place when a planning application is prepared for the whole site – this is expected to be next year.

There will also be consultation on individual sites for example Quebec Barracks.

Dunhurst pupil, Emilie Jung, has won the Sports Award in the Petersfield Business and Community Awards, and was also awarded Highly Commended for the Young Achiever of the Year.

Jane Grubb, Head of Dunhurst, nominated Emilie for the awards due to the sheer hard work and determination which she has shown and for what she has achieved in the last 12 months, including success at a number of cross country events, as well as netball.

She was first girl in the Years 8-12 Butser Challenge Race (she is only a Year 8 herself); 1st at Westbourne House School cross country; 3rd out of 43 at the South East Hants cross country; and was selected for the Hampshire Netball Academy.

Attending the awards ceremony at the Festival Hall with her family, Emilie said:
“It is great that there is an award like this for children. I was surprised and delighted to have won, it meant a lot to me and will inspire me to keep going in the future.”

Jane said:
“It is wonderful for Emilie to receive recognition for her achievements. She is a very dedicated young sports woman and shows real grit and determination both individually but also when she plays in our Dunhurst sports teams. Having sporty, sparky people like Emile at Dunhurst is what makes the school so special.”

Colourful, clever and entirely student-led, the Bedales Film Festival 2012 was a great success.

Colourfully and cleverly masterminded by Fred Aspel in 6.2 (Upper Sixth) and entirely student-led, the Bedales Film Festival 2012, which is now in its 3rd year, was a great success.

Over 15 films by Bedales students were watched in the school’s Lupton Hall by an appreciative audience and scrutinised by a panel of five judges comprising Bedales Headmaster, Keith Budge; Deputy Head Dominic Oliver; Housemistress, Jenni Brittain; student Thaddeus Rasbash (6.2); and film producer/director, Koa Padolsky.

There were prizes for Best Comedy, Best Art Film, Best Music, Best Performance and Best Drama, with the overall prize going to Toby Goodger (6.2) for his remarkable account of the time he and his two brothers (both former Bedales students) spent in the wilds of the Yukon.

Tarquin Ramsay’s (Block 5/Year 11) sensitive account of an old man’s fading musical powers was also in the top three, as well as winning the prize for Best Music and Best Drama.

Keith Budge explained: “Some of the films were carefully put together over months; some, more Blair Witch Project than high budget, resulted from the determined and frantic efforts of a wet Sunday afternoon.

“The range was therefore wide but the standard was impressive and shows a significant tick up from last year, making the annual Film Festival one of many beacons to student initiative and creativity here at Bedales.”

Koa Padolsky commented: “I was thoroughly impressed with the range of ideas, forms of expression and creativity the students have put into their projects. It was very exciting to see a new generation of emerging filmmakers put their ideas to film and be so positively received by a supportive audience.”

The evening involved children from Classes 1 and 2, with the aim of giving parents a glimpse of work the children have studied in their music lessons, as well as providing these burgeoning musicians with a relaxed performing environment.

Several children performed proficient solo items and Class 2 recorder players showed off their skills with accomplished playing.

Class 2 demonstrated their knowledge of music from islands around the world, whilst Class 1 dazzled with their ability to follow performance directions in the Aboriginal story Tiddalik.

The children performed a wide variety of songs, with the emphasis on high energy actions to show their excellent sense of pulse and several of the songs linked to the Olympic Games.

Many involved instrumental accompaniments and all showing that the children were entirely comfortable in the limelight. Performers and audience thoroughly enjoyed the whole evening.

30 diamond-shaped lanterns were made from the withies provided and Sylvia commented on how she was delighted with the quality of the lanterns produced.

The lanterns are to be used to help celebrate the Diamond Jubilee in Petersfield and will be lit during a lantern procession on the Heath on Monday 4th June.

It is hoped that over the coming weeks over 500 lanterns will be made in different venues and will make a memorable sight when lit to celebrate the Jubilee.

Sylvia and Zoe will be running another session at Petersfield Community Centre on Sunday 3rd June 2012 11am – 5pm.

Police are appealing for information after a man tried to rob an elderly woman in Petersfield.

Detectives would particularly like to hear from a woman whom the victim stopped to speak with afterwards.

The victim, 84, had gone out for a walk on the Heath, Sussex Road, on Thursday evening, May 10.

Shortly after 7pm, she was approached by a young man who asked her for money. He was holding what appeared to be a sharp implement.

She refused. He picked up a log and asked again. Again the woman refused and walked off without handing anything to him.

The suspect is described as

a white man

15 or 16-years-old

5ft 5-6ins tall

Slight build

Clean shaven

Wearing brown zipped hooded top with the hood up, matching brown tracksuit trousers, brown trainer boots

Carrying a flat red implement with a metallic end

He walked off towards the town centre and was spotted on a road off the Avenue.

DC Ewan Gardner from Alton CID said “Thankfully the woman didn’t come to any harm but was intimidated by the man’s behaviour.

“We’d like to hear from anyone who witnessed what happened, saw the suspect in the area or has information about who’s responsible.

“I’m particularly keen to hear from a woman with a child that who the victim stopped to speak with afterwards at the play park on Heath Road. That woman may have seen the suspect walk passed and could help us identify him.

“Police officers and police community support officers from the Safer Neighbourhoods team are conducting reassurance patrols in the area. I’d also like to remind people to keep an eye out for anyone acting suspiciously and report anything to the police immediately.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact DC Gardner at Alton police station on 101 or the anonymous Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111. Minicom users should contact 01962 875000. Send a message direct to a police officer using our online messaging system here.

Elderly or vulnerable people who are unsteady on their feet can take advantage of a new class in Alton designed to improve balance and help prevent falls.

Community Falls Assessment Days will be held at Alton Sports Centre on Tuesday afternoons during May and June for people who have a fear of falling. Those assessed to be at risk will be able to attend the classes.

The classes, called Steady and Strong, offer local older people a fun and enjoyable exercise class that, when completed regularly, will help improve mobility, balance, flexibility and confidence to ultimately help reduce the fear of falling and the likelihood of a fall. Participants will also learn easy ways to help them get up from the floor safely should they fall. It will enable people with specific medical concerns to get active and become more mobile and independent.

To be suitable for the class you must be able to:-

Get yourself to the weekly class on a Tuesday afternoon between 1.45pm – 2.45pm at Alton Sports Centre

Be able to take instructions and be happy to exercise as part of a group

Be able to rise from a chair unaided.

Be able to stand behind a chair holding on for a least 1 minute

Not waiting for any further investigations/operations

The Falls Assessment Days have been arranged by East Hampshire District Council and other partners and are free to attend.

The assessments will be with Paula Haidon, a Falls Prevention Specialist Exercise Instructor and will last for 45 minutes. A recommendation will be made to people who will benefit from the Steady and Strong class.

Patients accessing the existing Falls Clinic at Alton Community Hospital may also be referred to the Steady and Strong class to reduce the risk of future falls.

Falls are a serious and growing problem affecting 1 in 3 adults over the age of 65 and costing the NHS approximately £1.7b per year. Hip fractures are the most common cause of injury following a fall and affect 60,000 fallers per year.

Evidence shows that specific exercise programmes to improve strength and balance can reduce the risk of falls by up to 55 per cent and also reduce the severity of injury following a fall.

Steady and Strong is a partnership project between EHDC, NHS Southern Health, DC Leisure, and Paula Haidon, a local Falls Prevention Specialist Exercise Instructor.

For more information and to book an appointment for a Falls Assessment please contact Paula Haidon on 01428 723324 or email her on paulahaidon@aol.co.uk.
